 Underwater GPS

  • I have developed my own underwater GPS system that I use to mark locations of fish and or eggs when I do underwater survey dives.   I have a colour Garmin GPS unit in an Ikelite blank housing.   I have added 4 of Ikelite control knobs into the housing, and also a bulkhead fitting that seals the cable connection.   The cable runs to the surface where the antenna sits on a float.   The antenna is a powered amplifier type, and if the cable is kept tight under water, floats directly above the diver.   Accuracy appears to be around 4-6m at the moment, which is fine to follow previous dived paths and find waypoint and marking as well.   I have loaded the Garmin software and purchased the marine maps, including tide info and depths.   The whole lot is then attached to my camera, so I can also take pictures and reference the Camera Image Date Time stamp to get the picture location.   I then use the time to reference the depth on my dive profile to also add the depth to the image.  For more info, please drop me an email via the contact page.   Click on the image for a larger view...
